Cirque du Soleil, Navy SEALs and Getting Fit
You are not hallucinating if you pop your head into Aeriel Fitness and Natural Wellness Center on Main Street in Riverhead and think Cirque Du Soleil has come to the East End. There may be bodies bending and twisting and wrapping around long pieces of material suspended from the ceiling, and while they may look like members of the famed Cirque Du Soleil troupe, they are actually participants in one of the hottest training trends—and members of an exclusive group.
“We are the only place on the East End that offers the silk training,” says April Yakeoski, owner of Aeriel Fitness, who believes the acrobatic endeavor is a perfect example of how making exercise fun will make people exercise. “I started Aeriel Fitness because I’m passionate about keeping people healthy and happy. The training I do as an instructor has worked best for my clients out of all the different forms of exercise that I’ve tried. They are a lot of fun to do, everybody in my classes loves the experience, there is a lot of camaraderie in our classes and everybody is supporting one another, which makes it fun and effective as well.”
If you’re more Seal Team 6 than circus performer, you may be more geared toward TRX, a form of exercise that was developed by the Navy Seals and uses the weight of your body and leverage to perform highly intense exercises. “This is a great way for people to build strength and burn calories,” says April, “and is very different.” And you don’t need to go to Vegas.
