Meaningful Coincidences
The word synchronicity is derived from the Greek syn meaning “together” and chronos meaning “time.” The pioneering psychologist Carl Jung’s Theory of Synchronicity postulated that things that occur at the same moment have a relationship of significance, if not of actual causality. This prescient theory predates Benoit Mandelbrot’s Chaos Theory, which can now prove scientifically that a butterfly flapping its wings in Japan has a measurable and predictable affect on the weather in San Francisco.
We have been told we are all connected by everyone from the founders of every religion to Albert Einstein’s formula E=MC2 and even by many modern advertising campaigns. However, nothing compares to the wonder and excitement of seeing this fact in action and actually experiencing synchronicity in one’s life. There are as many ways to experience these “meaningful coincidences” as there are people in the world, yet some people see them as mere chance, while to others they are the living proof of the Great Spirit that animates all things.
Since the earliest days of humankind, it has been accepted without question that these moments of synchronicity and especially the people who were able to interpret and even predict special events are agents of the Divine. They became known as “oracles.” Like the three-legged stool upon which sat the most famous of them all, the legendary Oracle of Apollo at Delphi, the word oracle has three meanings: An oracle is the person who gives the pronouncement of the deity or divine force from when the message comes; it is the shrine where the message is given; and it is the message, itself.
Turning for inspiration and guidance to an oracle like the tarot and the other divination systems I have created is just like looking for information on the Internet. There is an almost infinite amount of it out there for you to access, but whatever information you find is only going to help you to the degree that you know how to interpret and make use of it. Using an oracle regularly creates a ritual space in one’s life where we can restore our connection with the quiet voice of our higher mind and benefit from its wise guidance. Creating this oasis of calm in the midst of the hectic pace of modern life helps us tune into the meaningful coincidences that help to give our lives meaning.
