CBS News Anchor Is Killed In Crash With A Propane Tank In Amagansett
East Hampton Town Police Dept. Detectives are investigating a motor vehicle crash in Amagansett that claimed the life of an East Hampton man this morning.
Richard D. Threlkeld, 74, a former Anchorman for CBS News, was traveling northbound on Cross Highway at the intersection of Route 27 in Amagansett at 8:18 a.m. when his 2008 Mini Cooper collided with a 2005 Peterbilt propane tanker driven by Earl Fryberger Jr. who was eastbound on Route 27.
Threlkeld was transported to Southampton Hospital via Amagansett Fire Department Ambulance where he was pronounced dead by emergency room personnel. Fryberger, 57, of Coaesville, PA, was not injured.
Both vehicles will undergo safety checks. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
