Facebook Murder
I am constantly asked why I don’t use Facebook. I’m asked this so much, that a part of me feels like signing up for it just to avoid having to answer why I don’t have Facebook.
Do I think Facebook is bad? No I do not. It just isn’t for me. When I did have it, I found myself in too many situations that I didn’t like. One is the situation of de-friending somebody, and the other scenario I didn’t like was that I found myself becoming WAY too interested in other people’s lives. It started to feel unhealthy. Then, and this was the final straw for me, was I didn’t like the fact that people I didn’t really know would be able to find out a lot of information about me, and that just in general made me uncomfortable. This was back before Facebook had a lot of privacy options. Now I know that I could go back onto it and set my privacy settings high, but at the same time, I don’t really want Facebook, as a company, to know so much information about me. I don’t know, it just bothers me. Call me crazy.
On the other hand, I think Facebook is an amazing tool for small businesses and for self promotion and will rival Google as a company when they go public.
Anyway, the reason I’m writing all of this is because of an interesting story I read this morning about Facebook and a murder, and it made me sick to my stomach: reuters.com reported this morning:
A Tennessee couple who “defriended” a woman on Facebook were murdered in their home by the jilted woman’s father and another man, police said on Thursday.
“It’s the worst thing I’ve ever seen,” Johnson County Sheriff Mike Reece said, adding he had never seen anything like it in his 27 years in law enforcement in the area. “We’ve had murders, but nothing like this. This is just senseless.”
He said Billy Clay Payne, Jr. and Billie Jean Hayworth were killed last month after they deleted Jenelle Potter, the daughter of one of the suspects, from their “friends” list. Both were shot in the head and the man had his throat cut.
The couple’s 8-month-old baby was in the mother’s arms, unharmed, when the bodies were found.
What the hell is wrong with people these days!
