The Hamptons, NY chapter of the Honor Society of Leap Year Day Babies has been very quiet today. That could be attributed to the weather. Or the fact that it does not actually exist. The Hamptons chapter, that is (at least as far as we can tell—they may simply be a very, very shy group). The HSLYDB is very much real.
The HSLYDB estimates that approximately 200,000 people nationwide were born on Leap Day, and some 10,000 of them belong to the HSLYDB. There are Leap Year Baby activists in the membership, and they support Leap Consciousness. As intriguing as this group may sound, you cannot join unless you are a Leapean—meaning your birthday is February 29 (you may also be called a Leapy). But that does not mean you should remain ignorant, so we offer our ten favorite terms from the HSLYDB glossary:
Leapify—To make Leap Day oriented
Leapover—A sleepover birthday party for a Leap Day Baby
Leapicious - Something that is good
Leapicide—People who celebrate on Feb 28 and Mar 1 as well as Feb 29
Leapination—What in Leapination is that?
Leapitude—The attitude of a Leap Day Baby about their Leapness
Leapless—Anyone not born on February 29
Leapenvy—Jealousy from not being born on February 29
