The General Services Administration, also known as the GSA, created a draft environmental impact statement that recommends the sale of Plum Island, the animal disease research facility that houses research to some of the most dangerous diseases in the world. The Department of Homeland Security, which is the operator of Plum Island, will be opening a new facility in Manhattan, Kansas that will cost an estimated $1.14 billion.
Plum Island’s future if it is sold, could be a housing development and it could also be a nature preserve. There are no official estimates as of yet what the government expects to yield from a sale of the island.
