Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone signed a bill yesterday that requires all boaters to take a mandatory boating safety course in order to operate a boat legally.
“This is common sense legislation that many will say is long overdue,” said Legislator Steve Stern, of Dix Hills during a press conference.
Once the law goes into effect, boaters who have not taken the course will face a $250 fine. The law is expected to go into effect by 2014.
