Riverhead's Football Team Wins Suffolk County Division II Championship!!!
The Riverhead Blue Waves are officially the Suffolk County Division II champions after a 52-20 win over North Babylon on Sunday at LaValle Stadium in Stony Brook. The RHS Blue Waves (9-2) will battle Garden City (10-1) on Saturday at Noon, for the Class II Long Island Championship at Stony Brook University.
In the game against the North Babylon Bull Dogs, quarterback Ryan Bitzer ran for 291 yards and threw three touchdown passes to wide receiver Quinn Funn and threw a 60-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jeffrey Pittman. Funn also scored on a fumble recovery and Bitzer ran in a touchdown after Funn (who had seven receptions for 153 yards) carried a pass to the 1-yard line. Jeremiah Cheatom rushed for 95 yards.
Superintendent of Schools Nancy Carney said, “It was so gratifying to see so many parents, students and community members in the stands Sunday night cheering our team on. I offer my congratulations to Coach Shay, his staff and his players for their dedication, hard work and talent on and off the field. These fine student athletes and the people who support them represent what is so great about Riverhead!”
This is some seriously cool news for Suffolk. If they beat Garden City, they are the toughest group of football players on Long Island. THE HEAT IS ON!
