Jill Rappaport Hosts Travels With Charlie Dog Walk
Jill Rappaport served as celebrity host of last weekend’s first-ever Travels With Charley Dog Walk, presented by Bay Street Theatre and Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons (ARF) in honor of Steinbeck Weekend in Sag Harbor on Saturday. Barbara Slifka served as Honorary Chair.
More than 30 dog owners and their best friends began the 5K walk at Havens Beach and finished with a “Bagels and Bones” reception at Bay Street Theatre. For raising $1,000 at the event, Lizzie Goldstein won the day’s grand prize—an ARF tote-bag and two tickets to one of Bay Street’s main stage shows this season.
The Travels With Charley Dog Walk raised a total of $2,000 to benefit ARF and Bay Street Theatre. “I can’t think of a better way to spend a Hamptons day than walking my dogs, who at one time were all strays, for this wonderful event in May!” Rappaport said.
In 1960, John Steinbeck set off from his home in Sag Harbor with his French poodle, Charley, to drive cross country. He would travel alone, stay at campgrounds and talk to the locals along the way. Steinbeck’s book-length account of his journey, Travels With Charley, became a best-seller.
