Oscar de la Renta Gets CFDA Award from Pal Hillary
No one would accuse Hillary Clinton of being a fashionista, but on Monday night the former Secretary of State donned a gorgeous beaded midnight blue pantsuit and pulled out all her diplomatic skills and charm to honor a favorite of numerous First Ladies, designer Oscar de la Renta.
Clinton happily showed up at the annual Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) at Lincoln Center to present her longtime friend the Dominican-born designer with the Eleanor Lambert Founders Award named for the fashion publicist who created the Best Dressed List. Sag Harbor’s Andy Cohen of Bravo TV fame hosted the awards which were filled with the Hamptons top dogs in fashion, including Ralph Lauren, Donna Karan, Betsey Johnson, Vera Wang, Kenneth Cole, Michael Kors and Diane Von Furstenberg.
The room was also awash in red carpet names including presenters Ethan Hawke, Kerry Washington, Jessica Chastain, Hailee Steinfeld, Rose Byrne, Rooney Mara and Ireland Baldwin. Hillary praised Oscar for his 50-year career and his contributions to “the great American melting pot and his great immigrant story.
In one of the lighter moments of the evening, Clinton pitched a new show—poking fun at herself—called Project Pantsuit. De la Renta said he hoped his friend would become the next president.
In a nice-neighbor fashion, Lauren presented the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award to Wang.
