Serena & Lily Has A New Design Center in Wainscott
Just in time for a busy Hamptons summer, California mail order catalog company Serena & Lily is offering East End residents more options to decorate their beach houses. Set on Route 27 in Wainscott, this former antique shop sparkles with a fresh new perspective complete with garage doors that recede to give an outdoor feeling to the shop. Serena & Lily’s new design center will stay open beyond Labor Day and offers Hamptonites year-round design products and services with everything from beach sarongs, totes and shoes to furniture, upholstered pieces, outdoor furniture, bedding, lighting and even paint.
The company was started by two industrious and creative women who, after a chance meeting, went into business together, initially designing a line of baby bedding out of a shop in Mill Valley, California. The baby sheets and bedding became a hit, and the company took off from there. Serena Dugan and Lily Kanter soon began designing their furniture collection and in addition to their busy, growing mail order business they decided to open a few choice shops around the country. We are lucky to have our very own Serena & Lily here in Wainscott, and the shop is offering their beach-inspired products as well as an expansive design studio in the back with fabrics and wallpapers offered by the yard. The colors, patterns and textures in the shop are bright, fun and seem to be a mix of California beach cool combined with an East Coast sophistication, and it all works well with the Hampton’s lifestyle.
I stepped in the backyard to check out their hammocks, hanging rattan seating and outdoor furniture, and was immediately inspired to add some new pieces to my patio and pergola area. The outdoor furniture is sturdy and covered in a large oversized black and cream awning stripe, which makes it feel modern and fresh. There are many tabletop linens and products to help make summer entertaining easier as well. I love the collection of Fouta towels, which feels quite a bit like traditional Turkish towels but offered in a variety of sunny colors. Also in the back area is the adorable KIDSHOP situated in a little freestanding cottage showcasing a full line of vividly colored and happy fabrics and products for baby, kid and teen. There are hanging baskets, lamps, beds, pillows, stuffed animals and many creative and practical ideas for decorating a fun children’s bedroom.
The bedding department in the design studio could very well be a store all by itself with the varied options. My daughter will be attending college in the fall, so we were on the look out for new bedding. I was over the moon with the myriad of graphic patterns in stock, and all in comfy, rich materials. We whiled away a rainy afternoon checking them out. The staff was friendly and sent us home with a few swatches to help make our decision easier. Bring your interior designer to the shop too, because Serena & Lily has implemented a new designer-friendly program, offering discounts for their products. There is plenty of space in the studio to get creative with your designer while checking out their wallpaper and fabric collections all offered up by the yard for custom work. I was particularly interested in the all-weather fabric offered by the yard and in some fun patterns. The Montauk pattern in the color Mocha, which is a combination of brown, blue and tan with a touch of white would work in both a traditional or contemporary home. I like the idea of one stop shopping with some retail options yet both indoor and outdoor fabric and wallpaper offered by the yard, which allows both designer and client to pick and choose between store bought items and opting for custom work. The shop is creatively designed and in a pretty setting, making designing a bit easier for everyone in the area. Thank you, Serena and Lily, and welcome to the East End.
