You’re out at the beach, you are with a group of people you don’t know very well, and somebody says to you, “Hey man, can you play something on your iPod?” You panic. You’re not sure if these are rock and roll type of people or hip hop type of people. But then you remember that the Top 100 Songs of Summer Countdown has your back, and that there is one song out there that NOBODY can say they don’t like to hear in the summer time.

“Buffalo Soldier” by Bob Marley
His legend is immense, his music nostalgic, his hair…well his hair is really long dreadlocks. Bob Marley is the answer to your summer time song problems, and Buffalo Soldier is the quarterback on his team of reggae music. Like a cold beer, it goes down easy, puts everybody in a good mood, and then of course, everybody tells a story that has to do with a long weekend in high school with a guy named Chaz.
The song was written in 1980, but didn’t come out on record until 1983 and it is about refer to the black U.S. cavalry regiments, known as “Buffalo Soldiers”, that fought in the Indian Wars after 1866, so now you know. A little ironic when you think about how throughout history, the people who are looked down upon are the ones that are always called upon the most during times of need. I know, I know, we just blew your mind right there, and that’s the point.
