Plein Air Peconic VIII at Ashawagh Hall
Plein Air Peconic’s popular annual exhibition and sale of local landscape paintings and photographs, Plein Air Peconic VIII, opens next weekend, October 4–6 at Ashawagh Hall (780 Springs Fireplace Road) in Springs. The group, which is dedicated to helping the Peconic Land Trust conserve the natural beauty of the East End, is inviting the public to an opening reception with wine and snacks on Saturday, October 5, from 5–8 p.m.
Exhibiting artists include Casey Chalem Anderson, Susan D’Alessio, Aubrey Grainger, Anita Kusick, Michele Margit, Gordon Matheson, Joanne Rosko, Tom Steele, Kathryn Szoka and new member Keith Mantell. They will be presenting artwork featuring East End landscapes—such as farm fields, meadows, wetlands, dunes and other area vistas—many of which depict sites that have been conserved through efforts of the Peconic Land Trust in partnership with landowners, local governments, partner organizations, communities and donors.
Among these conserved places are local farms that are “crucial to our farm-to-table fresh food movement,” Plein Air Peconic explains, adding, “By painting and photographing images of conserved land and other glorious open spaces on the East End, the artists call attention to what has already been accomplished by land conservation and the urgent need to protect vital resources before they disappear to development.
All the works are for sale and a percentage of all sales will be donated to the Peconic Land Trust, which was established in 1983 to conserve Long Island’s working farms and natural lands. Since its inception, the nonprofit trust has worked with landowners, donors, local government, partner organizations and communities to conserve nearly 11,000 acres of land on Long Island. This year, 2013, marks Peconic Land Trust’s 30th anniversary.
Plein Air Peconic VIII will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, October 4 and 5, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, October 6.
