Suspected Grenade Closed Street in Riverside for 5 Hours
Riverleigh Avenue between Ludlam Avenue and the Riverside traffic circle was closed and the area was evacuated Friday afternoon after a 911 caller reported that an object that appeared to be a grenade was tossed from a moving vehicle onto the shoulder.
Southampton Town police said that around 2 p.m. they responded to Riverside along with Suffolk County Police Department arson and emergency services units and Flanders Ambulance and found the green cylindrical object near Best Price Auto at 454 Riverleigh Avenue. It was treated as a live grenade.
Suffolk emergency services removed the object and rendered it safe, Southampton police said. The road re-opened around 7 p.m.
“At this time, it has not been determined that the device had the ability to detonate,” police said.
