Montauk Coast Guard to Receive Award for Summer Rescue
Coast Guard personell will receive a commendation Friday afternoon for their rescue this summer of John Aldridge, a Montauk lobsterman who clung to buoys and floated on his boots for half a day before the Coast Guard found him.
A search for Aldridge was launched on the morning of July 24 when he was reported missing by the crew of the lobster boat Anna Mary. It was later learned that he has fallen from the boat. The Coast Guard, with help from good Samaritans, searched an 1,100-square-foot area until they found him.
“The devotion to duty and the outstanding performance demonstrated by Station Montauk are in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Coast Guard,” the Guard stated.
Friday at 5 p.m., Coast Guard Captain Edward J. Cubanski, the commander of Sector Long Island Sound, will present a Meritorious Team Commendation to Station Montauk guardsmen during a presentation at the Montauk Fire Department.
