East End Arts Gallery Accepting Submissions for 'Line' Show
The East End Arts Gallery has announced its new juried, all-media art show, Line, opening with a reception from 5–7 p.m. on Friday, April 25 and running through June 13.
Anyone interested in being considered for this exhibition should submit work demonstrating a skillful use of line from April 17–19 (see details below). “A torso by Matisse, a curve by Brancusi, a hand or a flower photographed by Stieglitz or Mapplethorpe, a Sumi-e brushstroke — artistic mastery is much evident in the exquisite, simple line,” East End Arts Gallery Director, Jane Kirwood explains.
Architect, artist, and owner of ArtSites Gallery in Riverhead, Hideaki Ariizumi and artist Debbie Ma will serve as jurors for the show. At the reception, the public is invited to enjoy refreshments and meet the artists. The reception is a free event, open to the public. Artwork on exhibit is for sale.
Born in Tokyo, Japan, Ariizumi is the principal architect of studio a/b architects. Previously, he was an associate at Steven Holl Architects in New York, and the senior architect with Kazuo Shinohara Atelier in Japan. His designs advocate both the physical and intangible aspects of sites, creating choices by stimulating a mix of experiences and stressing a connection to nature. Designs by studio a/b architects have been featured in publications in the U.S., Japan and Europe, including Architectural Digest, The New York Times, and The New American House. His architectural projects have been earned design accolades such as AIA Peconic Design Awards, the NY Council SARA Design Award, and SD Review. His artworks, mostly related with spatial concepts, furniture and light, have been exhibited in New York City and Riverhead’s ArtSites, founded by Glynis Berry.
Ma is a graphic designer trained at the Parsons School of Design, who has worked in New York City for 20 years, specializing in packaging and design for major cosmetic companies, including Revlon, Estee Lauder, Maybelline, Ralph Lauren and Marc Jacobs, to name a few. While working as a graphic designer, she also followed her path as a fine artist, painting large-format abstracts in mixed media and oil. Over the years, Ma has shown her work in local galleries and New York City.
Visual art entries will be accepted Thursday, April 17 – Saturday, April 19 at the East End Arts Gallery, 133 East Main Street in Riverhead. For all entry information and complete drop-off schedule, visit eastendarts.org.
The “Best in Show” winner of this exhibition will be one of several artists to participate in the East End Arts Gallery’s Winners’ Show in the fall of 2015. First, second and third place will also be awarded, as well as honorable mentions.
The East End Arts Gallery is open Tuesday–Saturday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.
