Billy Joel: Live at Shea on MSG This Weekend
“Billy Joel Saturdays,” the MSG Network’s summer series, continues this weekend with a broadcast of Joel’s 2008 concerts at Shea Stadium. Billy Joel: Live at Shea will air on Saturday, June 28, at 8 p.m.
The Sag Harbor resident performed the final shows ever at Shea Stadium on July 16 and July 18 of that summer. The concerts brought together iconic artists, with surprise guests like Paul McCartney, Steven Tyler, Garth Brooks and Roger Daltrey.
Shea Stadium’s shows quickly became some of the most memorable and legendary performances for the Long Island native. In 2010, filmmakers released a documentary about the Shea Stadium shows titled, Last Play at Shea. The documentary will be repeated throughout the summer on MSG.
The summer series includes six different concert events spanning Joel’s career with shows from 1982 through the 2008 Shea Stadium performances. It premiered on May 17 and will continue for eighteen consecutive Saturdays through September. Other performances to be broadcast include shows from Yankee Stadium, the Telecomcerto at Colosseo in Rome, as well as concerts from The Nylon Curtain and River of Dreams tours.
Currently, Joel is the star performer of Madison Square Garden’s first music franchise. Joel has been a frequent performer at Madison Square Garden since his 1978 debut. In the new franchise, Joel will perform one show per month for as long as there is demand for him. The series of concerts began just this year on January 27, and is still going strong.
