Southampton Students Wins SoFo Scholarship
Devin Christopher Ficara, a recent graduate of Southampton High School, has won the sixth annual South Fork Natural History Museum (SoFo) Scholarship.
The $1,000 scholarship, which is sponsored in part by Bridgehampton National Bank, was presented to Ficara at the museum’s annual benefit on July 19.
According to a press statement released by the museum, SoFo’s mission is to “stimulate interest in, advance knowledge of, and foster appreciation for the natural environment with special emphasis on the unique natural history of Long Island’s South Fork.
The Bridgehampton museum was started in 1988 by a group of South Fork naturalists concerned about the future of local ecosystems.
As a student, Ficara has had a strong interest in Aquaculture and Oceanography. He has maintained both salt and fresh water tanks, as well as bred angelfish.
This summer, Ficara is working towards gaining his pilot license. He also enjoys dirt biking and fishing.
Ficara will attend Roger Williams University in the fall to study Environmental Science and Criminal Justice. He hopes to one day be involved in enforcing the environmental laws that protect the East End’s bays and waterways.
The South Fork Natural History Museum is located at 377 Bridgehampton/Sag Harbor Turnpike, Bridgehampton. For more information on the museum or any of their programs, visit sofo.org or call 631-537-9735.
