East End Beardsmen – Countdown to No-Shave November: Steve Daniel
Just 29 days remain before the start of America’s annual beardfest to raise cancer awareness, No-Shave November. As men around the country prepare to spend a month without shaving and enjoy the shaggy look, we celebrate facial follicles and countdown our favorite East End beardsman, from history and today. Let’s hope these hairy heroes help get you in the mood.
The third East Ender on the countdown is Dan’s Papers’ own Steve Daniel. He has been an employee of Dan’s Papers for 11 years, and a proud beardsman for even longer.
Daniel explains that he first began growing a beard during summer break from high school. Once he graduated, he put on a beard for good. Now 61 years old, he’s been bearded for more than four decades.
He did shave it off once, while living in Cleveland, but the clean-shaven chin was short-lived. He was looking to do something different, Daniel says. But everyone he encountered told him to grow it back, and he felt weird without it. He hasn’t looked back since.
“The key to good beard care is moisturizer,” Daniel offers. Beards can be itchy, but a good face cream will help, he says.
Daniel keeps the beard trim, sometimes with the help of his barbers, Tony and Andy at Main Street Haircutters in Riverhead.
“It doesn’t get too shaggy,” he says, explaining that being in sales or advertising has always required him to be pretty well groomed .
