Pedestrian Killed in Flanders Road Accident Identified as Fidel Ortiz
Fidel R. Ortiz, a 42-year-old Riverside man, was the pedestrian killed crossing Flanders Road Sunday night, according to Southampton Town police, and a second man struck by the same vehicle, Modesto Robles, 58, remains in intensive care at Stony Brook University Hospital.
The driver, a 40-year-old Riverhead man, is not facing charges at this time, police said.
Authorities said the accident occurred at about 7:53 p.m. just north of Vail Avenue. The driver was headed southbound when the two pedestrians were hit. Ortiz was pronounced dead at the scene, and Robles was flown to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition.
Flanders Road was closed for three hours while Southampton Town and New York State police investigated.
