Video: Wölffer Estate Vineyard Harvest Goes From Vine to Wine
Fall brings many things to the East End. Quieter streets and beaches, beautiful weather and great light. Fall also means it’s harvest time at our local vineyards. Long Island wine has come a long way in the last 30 years and now competes at the top of all classes and vintages. Reds, whites, Merlot, Cabs, dessert wines and more—all are produced at North Fork and South Fork vineyards and wineries.
Wölffer Estate Vineyard, founded in 1987 by its namesake Christian Wölffer, sits on 55 acres in Sagaponack. Located less than 3 miles from the ocean, the vineyard enjoys both a gorgeous space and prime growing conditions. Having had a great summer for growing, rows and rows of grapes were ready to be picked. Dan’s spent a morning at Wölffer taking a close look at their process. From vine to crushing, the grapes are handled very carefully. Enjoy this short video that takes you from the fields to the bottle.
The tasting room offers many wines to choose from along with Wölffer ‘s new Sparkling Cider. Wölffer No. 139 Sparkling Dry Cider is made from local Halsey apples. It joins an award winning line of vintages that include Cassango Cabernet Sauvignon 2009, Fatalis Fatum 2010, Sagaponack Red blend and Christian’s Cuvee Merlot 2010 which is the Vineyard’s 25th Anniversary wine.
