Housing Works Thrift Shops – 212-366-0820. www.housingworks.org/thrifts

On August 15, 2006 Housing Works Thrift Shops started rolling on the East End to pick up donations at Hamptons Homes. The tiny, six-shop Manhattan chain will assist Hampton residents in their end of season clean up by sending its trucks directly to their front doors to collect donations. The not-for-profit Thrift Shops welcome all usable and resaleable items, including furniture, books, housewares, women’s, men’s and children’s clothing, shoes and accessories. The organization emphasizes that these donations do much more than continue the life of the items. They contribute to the $10 million raised annually in support of homeless men, women and children living with HIV and AIDS in New York City. A pair of designer shoes that sell for $40 at one of the six Housing Works Thrift Shops in Manhattan provides ten days ‘worth of hot meals for a homeless HIV mother and her child. An armchair that raises $400 pays for two weeks of supportive housing for a person in need of a stable home.
