Real Estates by Diane Strecker
The East End market is certainly filled with its share of extraordinary estates and most of them have that familiar Hamptons stamp on them. What this means is the way in which they are built and decorated are truly distinctive to this area. It is what has come to be known as “Hamptons Style.” One could be practically anywhere else in the country and when some one is speaking about a Hamptons style home, a certain look will immediately come to mind. Cedar shingles, white columns, long private clamshell drives and open-ocean views. Many of these estates have spread outdoors by offering covered porches or pergolas that are decorated just as beautifully and are just as equipped as any room indoors, with features such as seating galleries, fire pits, bars, outdoor fireplaces, overhead lighting and fans and outdoor drapes that blow in the ocean breeze. All-white rooms with walls of French doors have also become a trademark look here. A typical Hamptons-style home would be much like the beach house featured in the movie Something’s Gotta Give. All the above-mentioned features in these homes are meant to get every bit of enjoyment and elongate the summer season. They are also ways of having the shore closer all year long. In Southampton, “Old Trees” is one such estate now on the market. It was built in 1911 and was designed by Goodhue Livingston. It is set on more than 10 acres bordering Lake Agawam in Southampton. The estate is completely enclosed by trees and is set far back from the road making for ultimate privacy. It has more than 400 feet of lake frontage and also has ocean views. The compound consists of a three-story main house with 13 bedrooms and 9 baths. It also has a sizable pool cabana, as well as staff quarters over the three-car garage. There is a pool, a tennis court and a 3-bedroom guest cottage. The current owner has completely updated and restored the entire estate. The property is listed exclusively with Prudential Douglas Elliman in Southampton. One can take a virtual tour of the estate by going to www.oldtreesestate.com. Another prime example of this style of estate can be found on Gin Lane in Southampton. This one is priced at $20 million and is not on, but is just steps to, the ocean beach in one of the most prestigious areas in the Hamptons. This five-acre traditional shingle Hamptons-style estate has six en-suite bedrooms, 9 baths, an observation tower, and a putting green. The 7500 square foot mansion is in impeccable condition. It is listed with The Corcoran Group in Bridgehampton. Another quite well-known estate in the Montauk Moorlands is now for sale. Celebrity artist and photographer Peter Beard is now selling his unique six-acre oceanfront. The estate consists of five oceanfront cottages and is in one the most secluded areas on the entire East End. Because it is so private, many celebrities have found their way to the Moorlands, where sometimes a driveway could be as much as a mile long. This property is a classic example of one of the many high-end Montauk getaways in the Moorlands that are tucked securely away and are situated exceptionally close to the rugged cliff-side oceanfront where the water views are completely unobstructed. One of the buildings, a historic windmill, was moved there in the early 1970s from the highest point of Ditch Plains, Sandpiper Hill, an area more recently labeled Shadmoor. The windmill was saved from falling into the ocean, though the remains of the structure finally did years later. This estate is one of the most unique properties on the East End market today. The property is listed exclusively with Prudential Douglas Elliman at $20 Million. You can reach Diane at eastendrealest@yahoo.com.
