NAME THAT TOWN

Dear Dan,
I’d like to request that when you refer to the Eastport/South Manor school district, you refrain from abbreviating it to Eastport/SM.
As a Manorville resident who is among your readership, I would really appreciate the eight extra letters.

BEAUTY SHOT

Dear Dan,
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for featuring my painting on the cover of your current issue. The article that Marion wrote was really nice and I want to thank her for a fun interview.
I enjoy your paper and read it online here in Florida and whenever I come to the Hamptons. I always take the paper back with me. (I guess it is a taste of home.)
Thank you again.

BLOWN AWAY

Dear Dan,
Just a note to correct the date on the 1938 hurricane written by Skye in your Sept. 8th paper. The day was Sept. 21st not the 20th. I know this because it was my birthday. I turned fifteen years old that day and I was a student in the Westhampton Beach High School.
I’ve had many birthdays since then but thank goodness never another like that. I know they keep predicting we are due for another hurricane but I hope it won’t be of that magnitude.
Keep writing Dan and I’ll keep reading.
Sincerely.

ANIMAL LOVER

Dear Dan,
I read an article in one of your Montauk Papers (I’ve since lost the paper) however I’m assuming that the article meant to be “fact.”
I cannot process the notion that there is in Montauk someone who is so very twisted and cruel as your “deer-slayer.” First of all it is illegal (plowing into a deer on purpose) but secondly, do we even want to live with someone in our midst who is so cruel and dangerous?
As the adage goes, “they will tire of killing animals and move to people.” There are many solutions to the so called “deer problem.” However, I don’t see anywhere near as many deer as we have had in the past.
Most villages on Long Island have 20-mph speed limits. Why not Montauk? Also, birth control seems to work for Fire Island. Why not try it here?
If this “deer slaughterer” person is real then I am out of here. Imagine how safe we are if the police know his plate numbers, what he is up to and still haven’t incarcerated him? It makes one pause to consider the mentality of the East End and whether or not we want our children raised in this environment, especially since we try to teach respect for animals.
The article from a local paper where there were kids from East Hampton torturing deer by dragging them from their cars should have been a wake up call. The next wake up call should have been not having or reading what form of punishment the perpetrators of this sick crime received.
I think the time has finally come to get out of town and hope that those who choose to live here will be strong enough to take on the “evil-doers”. I hope that they and their children will win. Maybe a “come on” mentality is in these days, but we have to live with ourselves and something those who commit atrocities can’t and bail out. That’s not very uncommon in Montauk or East Hampton. Is it?
Thanks for the good memories Eastern Long Island; good luck in the future.

DOGGONE IT

Dear Dan,
1) A lot of space for a dog story!
2) Mr. Caldwell lacks control of his dog!
3) He doesn’t even abide by the license law!
4) “Years ago” we weren’t as protective of our precious beaches,
5) Trash and animal feces left by humans must be eliminated. (Don’t let your dog run without accompanying it!)
6) Our signs are clearly produced. You do know what 15 minutes means! One hour was fine then, but we have increased population that would like to share the view. If you need to view more than 15 minutes, we do have plenty of parks and parking spaces.
7) No dogs on any beach, leash or not.
Thank you.
Diana Wells

Mr. Caldwell was hit with $650 in fines after East Hampton Dog Control people left out treats for his dog at the entrance to a beach to lure him away from Caldwell’s control. –DR
