Take Five 2006 with Jan SilverHIGHLIGHTS Columbus Day weekend brings much entertainment to the South Fork. Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center has Songwriters Hall of Famer Jimmy Webb on Saturday evening and the funny Umbilical Brothers for two shows on Sunday. Sag Harbor’s Bay Street Theatre presents HBO comedy star Robert Wuhl on Saturday and Best Female Stand-Up Comedy winner Kathleen Madigan on Sunday. East Hampton’s Guild Hall has South American comedian Saulo Garcia’s one-man show El Insomnio Americano on Saturday. There are also several independent film screenings in Sag Harbor, East Hampton and Southampton this weekend. Several local villages have fall celebrations this weekend. Southampton’s harvest weekend starts tonight at the library with music and laughter from Eric Knight, then sidewalk sales on Saturday and Sunday (raindate Monday), “Taste of Southampton” specials at local restaurants, and a family circus day Sunday at the Parrish Art Museum. Westhampton Beach has an art show on the village green Saturday and Sunday with pianist Peter Martin Weiss and flutist/saxophonist Julie Bluestone performing both days from noon to 2 p.m. The Ross School’s Bridgehampton campus on Butter Lane hosts the annual Potato Festival on Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (all-natural foods, special potato dishes from local restaurants, children’s games; free admission but donations are suggested). Sag Harbor stores have sidewalk sales on Sunday, and Bayberry Nursery in Amagansett holds the annual Giant Pumpkin Contest and Weigh-off on Sunday at noon. Some years, competitors have brought in pumpkins weighing more than 200 pounds. The Hamptons International Film Festival’s (October 18-22) schedule and tickets are now available online (www.hamptonsfilmfest.org), by telephone (1-866-HIFF-TIX) or at the box office (East Hampton Historical Society, 101 Main St., across from The Palm restaurant). The East Hampton Artists Studio Tour is this Saturday and Sunday. More than 20 studios will be open each day from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. for the self-guided tour. Meet the artists and purchase their work. Admission is $50 to the nonprofit Artists Alliance of East Hampton (sold at several local stores or call 631-324-2225) and it includes a cocktail party Saturday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. THEATER and COMEDY Bay Street Theatre’s “Comedy Club” has two performers this weekend. On Saturday, Robert Wuhl is onstage at 8 p.m. He created and starred in two successful HBO series, Arli$$ and Assume the Position. He is an Emmy Award winner, a movie actor and known for his storytelling comedic style. On Sunday at 8 p.m., comedian Kathleen Madigan takes center stage. She has her own HBO comedy show, often guests on the late-night television shows and received the American Comedy Award’s Best Female Stand-Up. The very funny and off-the-wall performing Umbilical Brothers bring their Off-Broadway show Thwak to the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center on Sunday. The Hampton Theatre Company presents Charles Busch’s hit Broadway comedy The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife beginning next Thursday evening at the Quogue Community Hall. Andrew Botsford plays the nice doctor husband, Frances Sherman is his neurotically funny wife, Mindy Washington portrays the very comic mother-in-law and Ali Hamdouchi is their Iraqi doorman. Singer/pianist/composer Jimmy Webb takes the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center stage on Saturday at 8 p.m. Elected to the American Songwriters Hall of Fame and winner of multiple Grammy Awards for composing and orchestration, he is the composer of “Galveston,” “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” “Wichita Lineman,” “Up, Up and Away” and “MacArthur Park.” His songs have been big hits for Glen Campbell, the Fifth Dimension, and Richard Harris, but he is a fine interpreter of his own music. FILMS There are four very different films showing at local venues tonight. The John Jermain library, Sag Harbor, presents the recent comedy Thank You for Smoking at 6:30 p.m. There is no admission charge, but arrive a few minutes early for a good seat. Southampton’s Parrish Art Museum begins its fall international cinema series at 7 p.m. with the mystery Cache (France, 2005) starring Daniel Auteuil, Juliette Binoche and Annie Girardot ($5 Museum members, $8 guests). East Hampton’s Pollock-Krasner House continues its “Artists on Film” series with sculptor John Chamberlain’s choice tonight of Rustler’s Rhapsody, a little-known satire of westerns and homosexuality; Chamberlain will briefly discuss the film with historian Dr. Marion Wohlberg Weiss (7 p.m.; $5 guests, $4 members). “The Picture Show at Bay Street Theatre” presents the musical comedy Daddy Long Legs, starring Leslie Caron and Fred Astaire, at 8 p.m. The $5 admission includes popcorn. The 1974 documentary about Pop Art collector Robert Scull will be screened and introduced by its co-director, E.J. Vaughn, on Sunday, 4 p.m., at Guild Hall, East Hampton (free admission).
