A Wedding Makeup Primer From a Pro

You’ve seen it,-cringed at it, pretending not to
notice, the bride walking down the aisle who looks like she went to
clown school to get her makeup done, or the bride who wanted the natural
look and ended up looking so natural that she should have been wearing
Birkenstocks and overalls. Never fear, there is a middle ground here
– one that you don’t have to be a pro to achieve.
If you are hiring someone to do your makeup for you…
1. Proof is in the work. A portfolio is a must – any makeup artist
worth her weight should have a smokin’ book and be proud of it.
2.-Referrals. That’s how good makeup artists get most of their
work.
3. Book a trial. You want to be absolutely sure that this person understands
what you want. There’s no room for guesswork here.
4. Bring photos. Give your makeup artist some idea as to what it is
you are going for – natural and pretty, dramatic and smoky, whatever
your preference.
5. Bring a digital camera. Make sure that the look can cross over onto
film and look just as good as it does in person.
Now, if your are feeling brave enough to do your own makeup on your
big day, here’s my advice… DON’T!
Your photos are your memories and makeup artists know how to make these
photos look beautiful.
But if you still think you can do it, here are some tips…
1. Sephora. It’s the best place to shop for your makeup and the
staff is pretty knowledgeable regarding all aspects of color and application.
2. Let the salespeople guide you. Tell them what look you are aiming
for and bring photos to make it really clear.
3. You can have them apply half of your face and walk you through it,
and then you can try to do the other side. This is a very helpful exercise.
4. Do not, I repeat, do not go for a lip or eyebrow wax, Botox or Restalyne
injections before your wedding. These procedures can blow up your face
like Goldie Hawn’s lips in The First Wives’ Club.
5. The same holds true for spray tans. Make it a gradual layering process,
so you don’t streak or smear.
6. When applying your makeup, do it in as natural a light as possible.
I am always in front of a window. If it’s too dark out, I remove
the shade off of a lamp and use that light.
7. Go with muted, natural shades, and blend, blend, blend. It can dramatically
open up your eyes and make them look incredible.
8. Stay away from too much glitter. Your dress and veil are not to compete
with your face, but compliment it.
9. Keep lip liners muted and the same color as your lips. The 90s are
over, and so are the days of brown, pink and red liners, thank God.
10. Please make sure your foundation disappears into your skin.
Here is a basic shopping list for your Sephora trip…
1. Primer
2. Foundation
3. Concealer
4. Translucent powder
5. Bronzer
6. Blush
7. Brow highlighter
8. Case of 3 or 4 shadows
9. Eyeliner pencil and gel liner
10. Waterproof mascara
Good luck! And remember, if you are at all nervous about applying your
own makeup for your big day, let the pros handle it!
