‘EHM’s “The Rock Art Show” at Duck Walk Vineyards
When you think of rock ‘n roll you may picture messy hair, snare drums, electric guitars and a “dressed to kill” appearance. When you think of an art show, you may picture wine and cheese platters, quiet conversations, the Louvre, aesthetically pleasing mediums and a “refined to casual” appearance. The coming together of these two worlds has finally happened. This weekend, Progressive Radio for Long Island, 92.9 and 96.9 ‘EHM will display a rare collection of rock ‘n roll artwork at the Duck Walk Vineyards in Southampton. The Rock Art Show is a traveling art show presented by local radio stations around the country. What is interesting about this art show is that there is no permanent gallery; the only way to view the work is by listening to their radio partners or by visiting their website, and, of course, by coming to the Rock Art Show this weekend. The exclusive collection of artwork had been created by or features some of history’s most legendary musicians. John Lennon, Jerry Garcia, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Bruce Springsteen and Tony Bennett are among the many musicians whose artwork will be for sale. Not only will there be artwork for sale, but rare collections of handwritten lyrics, concert tour posters, gold records, famous rock photographs and animation cels from the Beatles’ ABC “Saturday Morning Cartoon” series will also be available. Other artists and musicians whose work will be for sale include Paul McCartney, John Entwistle (The Who), Ron Wood (Rolling Stones), Carols Santana, David Bowie, U2, Robby Krieger (The Doors), Ringo Starr, John Mellencamp, Pink Floyd, ZZ Top, Johnny Cash, and Frank Sinatra. Marissa Friedes, Assistant Promotions Director of Long Island Radio Broadcasting, explained that for two years they helped out with the Beatles show and this show in particular is for everyone. She added that, while visual art is often seen as “high-brow” and rock ‘n roll is often pictured as “grunge,” the Rock Art Show is a wonderful opportunity to bring the two concepts together for listeners from across Suffolk County to enjoy. She remarked that “’EHM is truly a station that revolves around music.” In honor of the Rock Art Show, ‘EHM is having an on-air give away of a lithograph titled, “Santana ‘69.” This image was taken from two photographs shot at Woodstock in 1969. One photo was taken by legendary concert promoter Bill Graham and the other by Baron Wolman, the first official Rolling Stone magazine photographer. Carlos Santana supervised the entire printing process, adding wild colors to the black and white image. The piece is signed by Santana and Wolman. You can qualify to win the lithograph by calling in and listening to announcements on ‘EHM. When asked about the significance of the Rock Art Show, Hedy Krebs-Demaio, the Vice President and General Manager of Long Island Radio Broadcasting at ‘EHM explained that part of the great significance is that “as a company, we try to bring the best of music to ‘EHM. We like to bring events to the community that are family-friendly and fun for the East End and Suffolk County, since ‘EHM now covers most of Suffolk County.” Ms. Krebs-Demaio explained that it is the tradition of their radio group to bring important events that showcase music and culture, “which is what radio does best,” she added. Ms. Krebs-Demaio stressed the importance of this event for our local community, and noted that a portion of its proceeds will be donated to the Sunrise Fund, which raises awareness and money for the Pediatric Onocology Program at Stony Brook University Medical Center. The ‘EHM Rock Art Show is the largest exhibit of its kind in the world, and it will only be at the Duck Walk Vineyards this weekend, Friday, November 17 through Sunday, November 19, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. At the event, visitors can participate in wine tasting and enjoy live music by local Long Island artists Terry Winchell, Caroline Doctorow and Telly. Terry Winchell is singer-songwriter whose songs are soulful and innovative; her latest CD is “Vice Versa.” Caroline Doctorow, who will be performing with Gene Casey from the Lone Sharks, is also a singer-songwriter and has released four records in the folk-pop genre. Her most recent CD is Carmel Valley Ride. Telly is a rock-indie-acoustic artist whose latest CD is Free Music For Sale. Visitors will have the chance to win a trip for two to the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. The event is sponsored by Astoria Federal Savings Bank and promises to present some of the world’s most exclusive artwork, exhibiting another creative fold in the fabric of these legends lives. – Victoria L.
