DAN’S HOLIDAY DAY BY DAY IN THE HAMPTONS

South Fork villages are very ecumenical in their December holiday celebrations. Here are some enjoyable events coming this month:

December 2 – annual Santa Parade down Main Street, East Hampton, starts at 10 a.m. This year’s theme is “Candyland.” Santa will welcome children in the lobby of the East Hampton Cinema where a complimentary movie will be shown at 11 a.m. (while parents can shop locally). Southampton Village’s holiday parade of decorated fire trucks starts down Main St. at 4:30 p.m. and ends at Agawam Park for a holiday tree lighting. Sag Harbor greets Santa’s arrival in front of Bay Street Theatre from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. with holiday lighting at the Long Wharf windmill at 6 p.m. Westhampton Beach holds its Christmas tree and Hanukah menorah lighting at 5:30 p.m. on the village green; the high school chorus and Hampton Synagogue youth choir will sing, and Santa stops by.

December 2 – East Hampton town crier Hugh King conducts a 7 p.m. walking tour by lantern light of historic village sites decorated for the holiday (weather permitting). Tour is $15 per person; call (631) 324-6850.

December 3 – Victorian magic-lantern show at East Hampton Historical Society’s Clinton Academy on Main St. Authentic 1890s Christmas comedy and music show with audience participation. Shows at 2, 3 and 4 p.m.; tickets $8 (EHHS members $5).

December 3 – Hampton Bays has its annual tree lighting and visit from Santa, 4 p.m., across from the firehouse on West Montauk Highway.

December 3 – Friends of Southampton’s Rogers Memorial Library invite all to a Hampton Trio concert at 3 p.m. Damon Ferrante’s “The Mountain” and “Tidewater Songs” will be performed, plus works by Handel and Smetana. A reception follows the performance; there is no admission charge but call (631) 283-0774 ext. 523 for reservations.

December 6 – Panel discussion on “East Hampton: Then and Now” at Guild Hall with Former Mayor Paul Rickenbach, town historian Hugh King, preservation consultant Robert Hefner and East Hampton Historical Society director Richard Barons (7 p.m.; free admission).

December 9 – “Pop Art Tributes to Indigenous Culture” at the Shinnecock National Cultural Center and Museum, Southampton, slide show at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Also, a Native American market featuring traditional arts and crafts, winter foods (samp, chowder, fry bread), and children’s activities. Free admission.

December 9 – “Charles Dickens” reads holiday selections from his own and friends’ writings at Clinton Academy, Main St., East Hampton, 4 p.m. (free admission).

December 9 – Southampton Cultural Center’s piano recital series presents Anna Stoytcheva, 7 p.m., Levitas Center for the Arts, 25 Pond Lane (tickets $15 general admission, $20 reserved seats, $10 seniors and students; call 631-287-4377).

December 10 – Choral Society of the Hamptons holiday concerts are at 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. at the Bridgehampton Presbyterian Church. This year’s program is songs by Bach, Handel, Purcell and Vivaldi. Tickets are $25 adults, $10 children 18 and under (631-204-9402). There’s a holiday party with caroling and a flea market open to all after the second concert (free admission).

December 11 – the acclaimed documentary about global warming An Inconvenient Truth (2006) is screened at Rogers Memorial Library, Southampton, 3 p.m. (free admission but call for reservations 631-283-0774 ext. 523).

December 12 – Southampton’s Rogers Memorial Library holiday trip to Manhattan’s Metropolitan Museum of Art with time for shopping or visiting other museums; $25 round-trip departs 8 a.m. from behind Parrish Museum and departs NYC at 4 p.m. (call 631-283-0774 ext. 523 for reservations). Christmas present idea: the Southampton Library has a theater/Jitney trip to the new musical Mary Poppins for Wednesday matinee, January 24 (orchestra ticket and Jitney roundtrip $125; call 631-283-0774 ext.523).

December 12 – Sag Harbor community concert, 8 p.m., at the Old Whalers Church features the community band and the Sweet Adelines and Whalers choruses.

December 12 – Naked Stage, the local theater artists collective, presents readings of one-act plays by contemporary playwrights (Sam Shepard’s Fool for Love and Edward Albee’s Zoo Story); Guild Hall, East Hampton, 7:30 p.m., free admission.

December 13 – Friends of the John Jermain Library offer a round-trip Hampton Jitney trip to Manhattan for holiday shopping or theater-going. Round-trip fare is $35; bus departs behind Apple Bank, Sag Harbor, at 8 a.m. and returns at 7 p.m. from 50th Street between 5th and 6th Aves.; for reservations, call (631) 725-5035 or (631) 725-3920.

December 13 – panel of acclaimed East End photographers discuss “Contemporary Photography” at Guild Hall, East Hampton, 7 p.m. (free admission).

December 15 The Picture Show at Bay Street Theatre is proud to present a screening of The Misfits, followed by a Talkback with Eli Wallach after the movie; Talkback hosted by Jeffrey Lyons. 8 p.m. $20 per person. December 15 to 30 Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts presents Radio City Entertainment’s production of the musical version of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol (call 631-207-1313, 1-888-4TIX NOW or online at www.gatewayplayhouse.com for tickets).

December 16 The Picture Show at Bay Street Theatre is proud to present a screening of Murder on the Orient Express, followed by a Talkback with Lauren Bacall and director Sidney Lumet after the movie; Talkback hosted by Jeffrey Lyons. 8 p.m. $50 per person. December 16 – Santa visits Main St., Southampton, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

December 18 – local Congressman Tim Bishop talks about local and national issues at Southampton’s Rogers Memorial Library, 7 p.m. (free admission but reservations required; call 631-283-0774 ext.523).

December 30 – “Journeys with Sound” performance at the Parrish Art Museum, Southampton. Hear the local instruments of Australia, Scotland, Hawaii, China, India, Ireland, Middle East and Native America played at a 2 p.m. concert (admission $3 Parrish Museum members, $8 non-members).

December 30 – Alice Denham reads from her memoir Sleeping with Bad Boys: Literary New York in the 1950s and ‘60s at Canio’s Books, Sag Harbor, 6 p.m. (free).

December 31 – Two New Year’s Eve performances of “Holiday Hop” with The Platters, The Drifters and The Marvelettes (7 p.m. $45, 10:30 p.m. $75) at Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts; call (631) 286-1133 or 1-888-4TIXNOW or go online to www.gatewayplayhouse.com.
