preview: the 2007 great chefs dinnerby Sabrina C. Mashburn In 2001, the young, charismatic owner of Nick & Toni’s, Jeff Salaway, passed away. Determined to keep his memory and culinary vision alive, his many friends in the restuarant business joined together with The Hayground School – which Jeff helped cofound – to create an event that would ensure the fulfillment of his dreams, even after his death. One of those dreams was to build a teaching kitchen at the Hayground school, and because of the efforts of his friends Bobby Flay, Larry Forgione, Marc Meyer, Alfred Portale and Jonathan Waxman, who presented the very first Great Chefs Dinner in 2003, that dream became a reality. This year’s Great Chefs Dinner will be even more star-studded than those that came before, with dishes prepared by twelve of the restaurant industry’s most talented chefs paired with wines from the some of the very best vineyards. All of the proceeds go to Jeff’s scholarship fund at the Hayground School. Hosts Drew Nieporent, Ruth Reichl, Toni Ross and Roy Scheider will be on hand to welcome guests, chefs, and Hayground student chefs, who will help prepare dessert with Miche Bacher of SacredSweets. Starters and main courses will feature the talents of Josh Capon from Lure Fishbar, Rebecca Charles of Pearl Oyster Bar, Tom Colicchio of Craft and “Top Chef,” Claudia Fleming of The North Fork Table and Inn, Larry Forgione of An American Place and An American Caféé St. Louis, Michael Huynh of Mai House, Marc Meyer of 5 Points, Cookshop, and Provence, Joseph Realmuto of Nick & Toni’s, Aaron Sanchez of Paladar and Centrico, Dan Silverman of Lever House, Toshio Tomita of Nobu and Laurent Tourondel of BLT. Along with exquisite food and wines, the evening will feature a live auction conducted by Drew Nieporent. Although this year’s auction prizes are top secret, past years prizes have included week-long vacations at a villa in Tuscany and a Telluride penthouse, and dinner parties prepared at the winners’ homes by world renowned chefs Bobby Flay, Joseph Realmuto, and Dan Silverman. The Great Chefs Dinner will be held on March 19 at Lure Fishbar in New York City. For tickets, please contact Donna Imbarrato at 631-327-0573 or via email at lucieliam@aol.com. – |
