STOP THE LITTERING!
Dear Dan,
I live in Remsenburg and my husband and I enjoy walking on South
Country Road, east over the Speonk River Bridge. However, people
leave small bags of garbage in white grocery bags along the road.
We have seen as many as three at a time. Can this be stopped?
Writing the Remsenburg Association did not get us any response.
Do other communities have this problem?
Thanks for listening.

SPRINGS STUDENT ASPIRES TO LEAD
AMERICA
Dear Dan,
I am currently enrolled in Springs school in East Hampton. I am
writing to you to ask for your support to enable me to become
enrolled in Lead America. I was selected by Mrs. Sue Ellen O'Connor.
I plan to attend Lead America on the topic of law and justice.
Lead America is an individual leadership
conference for our worlds most promising and outstanding middle
school and high school students. Top students from the United
States are selected and internationally are selected to participate.
It's a life-changing program that will help me develop important
leadership skills that will assist me in high school college and
beyond. Through briefings and discussions with national leaders
in the field we agree to study, I will have the opportunity to
learn first hand about the complexities of decision making in
a chosen field or profession. Students meet and learn from the
national and international leaders who provide insight.
My total funds to attend the conference
would be $2199.00. The contribution from my family is yet to be
determined. If I get my two scholarships, I will only need $1699.00.
I would greatly appreciate your
financial support in what ever amount you contribute. If you are
able to sponsor my participation, please make the check out to
Lead American and send it to my address on the bottom of this
letter. If you have trouble please contact me at 631-329-5699.
Thank you for taking your time
to consider my request.
Sincerely.

SPLENDID
Dear Dan,
I saw your article about the Equal/Splenda case pending in the
Philadelphia Federal Court. The case is likely to continue for
at least two weeks. The key issue is whether consumers interpret
the statement "made from sugar, so it tastes like sugar" believe
this to mean that Splenda is or contains sugar.
I will be a witness in the above
case, testifying about two consumer surveys which were conducted
by my company for Merisant (the manufacturer of Equal). If you
wish to have a follow-up story concerning this case, please feel
free to call me at my office. Incidentally, I served as such a
marketing expert in over 200 different litigations involving trademarks
and allegedly false advertising.
I noticed your article because
I am a summer resident in Southampton.
Cordially yours,
Henry D. Ostberg

SAVE DARFUR
Dear Dan, Dear Friends, Family,
Neighbors, and Supporters,
The walk was finished last Monday!
YAY! It was very exhausting but very wonderful at the same time.
I would like to thank all the people
who walked with me (My friends Emma and Ceren walked with me for
three whole days!) and thanks to those who donated to this project.
So far, the amount of donations and pledges is about $2,500! A
lot more people across Long Island now know about the atrocities
occurring in Darfur.
Dan's Papers, The Southampton Press,
The East Hampton Star, and The Glen Cove Record Pilot have all
written articles about my walk across Long Island. I thank them.
Also a special thank you to the Jewish Center of the Hamptons
who welcomed me so warmly. And to Vivian Cheng and Lindsey...thanks
so much for not only walking with me but for the terrific 400,000
faces t-shirt. (Please let me know where I can get more of them...a
lot of people are asking!) Also my brother, Jeremy, wants me to
send a special thank you out to Jim and "Tropical Joe" from the
CAP Center for walking too...it made him (and me) very happy.
After my Bat-Mitzvah, which occurs
next Saturday, I am sending all donations I have received to the
Save Darfur Coalition. Some people pledged and donated online.
Some people pledged a donation but preferred to give a check at
the event. If you have not already done so, you can write out
a check to "Save Darfur Coalition" and send it to me and I will
send it out with the other checks. Remember, your donations are
100% tax deductible. If you need my address just e-mail me and
I will send it to you. Thanks to everyone who supported me throughout
this whole experience!

TUNE IN THE SUMMER
Dear Dan,
The last two years I have enjoyed the music review of Summer Music
CDs that you publish in your paper. I just don't remember when
it was done, probably around Memorial Day. Do you plan on doing
this again?
We purchased most of those CDs
listed last year. One was by Van Morrison, which we did not really
know had existed. The person doing the review was excellent. We
don't want to miss it this year if you intend to publish.
Can you let us know if you are
and when?
Thanks.
