Southampton Hospital Designated a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence
Southampton Hospital has been designated a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence (BSCOE) by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC). This designation is an award given to weight loss programs where both the surgeons and facilities demonstrate an unparalleled commitment and the ability to consistently deliver safe and effective care to the surgical weight loss patients.
To achieve this honor, Southampton Hospital and the Director of its Weight Loss Surgery Program, Medhat E. Allam, MD, FACS, underwent a rigorous year-long evaluation by both ASMBS and SRC. This process included review of the care provided to the weight loss patients before, during and after surgery, as well as all data on surgical outcomes and long term weight loss results. In addition, weight loss programs seeking such recognition must undergo extensive site inspections to assure that the medical and administrative staffs meet the strict requirement of BSCOE status and are committed to providing comprehensive care to their patients.
Our ability to provide multi-disciplinary care to these patients was an important component and is required for the Center of Excellence designation. In addition to surgical care, the Weight Loss Program at Southampton Hospital provides its patients with customized nutritional and psychological support before and after the surgical intervention. Patients are monitored on a long-term basis and are encouraged to participate in monthly support group meetings held locally and conducted by a specialized team of a bariatric dietitian, a psychologist and Dr. Allam. “Earning the ASMBS Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence designation signifies our ability to consistently deliver the safest, highest-quality care to bariatric surgery patients,” said Robert S. Chaloner, Southampton Hospital’s President and CEO. “The ASMBS BSCOE program fosters quality improvement in bariatric surgery, and our participation has focused our team on exceeding clinical benchmarks and guidelines. Most importantly, our commitment to excellence improves the health and well-being of our patients.”
When considering weight loss surgery, the Center of Excellence designation is something that potential candidates should look for when evaluating hospital programs and surgeons. It ensures that the quality of care exceeds generally established standards, and shows Southampton Hospital’s commitment to deliver safe and effective care at the highest levels. [/expand]
