Capturing the Natural Beauty of the East End
You never forget your first time…on a Dan’s Papers cover, that is. Sag Harbor artist Casey Chalem Anderson certainly recalls hers. But more about that later.
Right now Chalem Anderson is talking about joining other top artists from the Hamptons and the North Fork at the Dan’s Papers Cover Artist Show & Cocktail Party, noting the excitement of being surrounded not only by other members of the East End artists community but by fans as well. “It’s always very nice to hear that someone likes your work,” she says with a smile. “It’s nice to be there and see someone appreciating what you’ve done.”

Whether it’s discovering a field of flowers in Sagaponack while trying to avoid traffic on 27 or staring out at a crashing wave and feeling the pull of Hokusai, David Hockney and Winslow Homer, an appreciation for her surroundings is one of the most essential aspects of Chalem Anderson’s work. She’s been drawing upon the natural beauty of the Hamptons since she moved here in the 1990s, but the most remarkable aspect of it all may be that “there’s always something new to see. When I had first moved here I was still doing a lot of figurative painting, and eventually I’ve been totally concentrating on landscapes,” she says. “Sometimes open fields, especially fields of flowers because it’s a great excuse to use color, but a lot of my paintings have water in it, and I think that’s my big attraction to the area—and many other people’s. Whether it’s calm water, tranquil and serene type of scenes, or ocean.”
