Your Money Matters: Financial Year-End Review
I would like to thank Dan’s Papers for the opportunity to introduce La Ferla Group, a branch within UBS Financial Services Inc., and for the honor to write a monthly financial column for danshamptons.com.
La Ferla Group began January 1981, managing lump sum IRA rollover accounts and personal accounts for retired airline pilots. In addition to airline pilots, our clients include individual investors, business professionals and various businesses and organizations residing throughout the United States from New York to California. Throughout our 30 years in business, we have evolved into a financial services organization offering our clients advisory and brokerage services. Our monthly column is designed to help our readers manage their assets throughout good and bad market periods.
Since this is our first column and it is late in the year, it is a good time to meet with your tax advisor to review your gains and losses for 2011.
Those of you who turned 70½ years old in tax year 2011, please remember you must satisfy your 2011 Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) by April 1, 2012 for all your IRA accounts. Thereafter, you must satisfy the RMD by December 31 each year. We suggest you consult with a tax advisor as to whether or not you should receive the 2011 RMD by December 30, 2011 to avoid receiving two RMD’s in 2012.
Year-end is a good time to review your beneficiaries listed on your IRA accounts. Wills and trusts should also be reviewed anytime there are changes to the family estate; and also, when there are changes regarding tax and estate laws.
The United States equity market is still feeling the adverse effects of being part of the global economy. Although this contagion has created challenges and frustration for investors, it has also presented opportunities. When you consider the market bottoms of October 2002, March 2009 and the “Flash Crash” of May 2010, it is easy to understand investor frustration. The goal of our monthly column is to give you a better understanding of the global markets and provide you with information that will help you to make decisions regarding your investment strategy.
As a resident of East Hampton, my time is divided between the East End and our office in Uniondale, which is located in the Omni Building, 333 Earle Ovington Blvd. across from the Nassau Veterans Coliseum.
From all of us at La Ferla Group, we wish you and your families a loving and wonderful holiday season and a healthy and prosperous New Year.
