Shinnecock Nation in Obama’s Budget
Amid concerns about budget cuts to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Shinnecock Nation was part of President Barack Obama’s Fiscal Year 2012 Budget released on February 14—following Congressman Tim Bishop’s urging that they receive the same funding as other newly recognized tribes typically get from the federal government.
“The Shinnecock Nation has fought long and hard for their proper recognition under federal law as well as access to the economic benefits available to duly recognized tribes,” said Bishop. “Despite the tough budget environment, America must honor our commitment to help newly-recognized tribes, and I am pleased that federal resources will help the tribal government meet the needs of the Shinnecock community.”
