Ask the Expert: Keys to Positive Thinking Power
Devastating news or a coworker who’s driving you crazy. All around us, every day—even in the sunny Hamptons!—are sources of negativity. But Joyce Philbin-Collier is here to discuss how these and other events offer the potential to accentuate the positive.
The Question: I have read and researched about the power of positive thinking but I still don’t quite understand how to use it to help in getting what I want. What exactly does power of positive thinking mean and how do you use it in your daily life?
The Answer from Joyce Philbin-Collier: Positive thinking is a way of living each day in the best possible way. It involves trying to find the good in people and situations when sometimes it is easier to think and behave negatively. If you constantly see the negative in everything around you, your world will be a negative place to be.
Positive thinking is not about going around with a disingenuous grin on your face. It is about changing how you see things, how you respond to people and how you genuinely think about things. If you judge others harshly and speak negatively about them, that draws more negative into your life. When you change your thoughts, you can change the entire direction of your life. [expand]
When we listen to news reports of devastating events that transforms lives in ways we cannot imagine, we tend to project and only focus on the loss of a house and physical belongings. While it is difficult to endure these types of physical losses due to fire or natural causes, it is the person who can see the physical loss, but focus on the idea that they grateful to be alive who is maintaining a positive outlook. It is that positive thinking that will be key in rebuilding their life. Personal belongings can be replaced. A house can be replaced. Positive thinking is the ability to count your blessings amidst otherwise desperate circumstances.
Every day we have a chance to choose to think differently about far less dramatic events. We have the choice to see something positive no matter what the significance. Try simple things first. You may have a coworker you don’t get along with very well. It’s all you can do to avoid them. Whether you realize it or not, this is a type of thinking is negative and can affect your day in ways you may not even know.
The next time you see this person, try to find one thing about them (whether it is something they say, or something they are wearing, etc.) that you like. You don’t have to say anything. Just start to sew positive thoughts in your mind instead of negative ones. You can only achieve your highest potential when you replace all negative thoughts with positive ones. It is a process. Once you can choose to think positively on a regular basis, you will attract the kind of things into your life that will help you reach your highest potential.
