Colin Goldberg: Improbable Forms at Art Sites

An exhibition of new mixed-media works on birch panels by Orient-based artist Colin Goldberg, Improbable Forms, opens at Art Sites Gallery in Riverhead next week.

This recent body of work combines traditional and digital media through the use of a pigment transfer process, resin and hand-painting, and includes diptychs, triptychs and single-panel works. Presented by Peconic Green Growth, the exhibition was funded by a generous grant from the Huntingon Arts Council and the New York State Council on the Arts, and will be on display at Art Sites from Saturday, May 11 to Sunday, June 2.

An opening reception will be held from 5–7 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, with refreshments from Salamander’s in Greenport. Art Sites‘ regular gallery hours are Thursday through Sunday 12-5 p.m. Call the gallery at 631-591-2401 for additional hours and further information.

Goldberg was born to parents of Japanese and Jewish ancestry in the Bronx in 1971 and moved to the East End at the age of 2. He attended Southampton High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Art from Binghamton University in 1994. After completing his undergraduate studies, he opened his first studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and later relocated to Avenue A in Manhattan’s East Village, where he began his exploration of digital media and its relation to abstraction. In 2007, Goldberg earned a Master of Fine Arts degree under full scholarship from Bowling Green State University in Ohio.

The artist’s work has been exhibited at the Manhattan Armory, the Parrish Art Museum, the Islip Art Museum and the Roberson Museum in Binghamton, as well as galleries and art fairs in the Hamptons, Manhattan, Boston, Miami, Los Angeles and San Francisco. In 2005, one of his canvasses was accepted into the permanent collection of the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center in Springs, the former home and studio of painters Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner. He is currently represented by Yes Gallery in Brooklyn, yesgalleryyes.com.
