Shark Attack Sounds Sets its Teeth in Montauk

Possibly the Hamptons hippest party, “Shark Attack Sounds” (SAS) is back for its 11th year on Friday and it should be bigger than ever.
Starting in 2002 as a simple Fourth of July party SAS has become one of the most notable Hamptons parties of the year, and has helped put Montauk on the hipster map.
The Montauk Yacht Club Resort & Marina will be hosting the July 5 event, now with an approved 3900-person capacity. Last year, the Independence Day rager was held at Rick’s Crabby Cowboy Café in Montauk and only anticipated, and had room for, a measly 800 people. Naturally, the crowd grew beyond 2,000, before being shut down by The Town of East Hampton. Let’s hope the club’s 32 acres will make out better than Rick’s Crabby Cowboy did last year.
To manage a Hamptons event of this magnitude takes not one, not two, but three hosts—and each host’s background helps bring a certain element to the table, to make the party as outrageous as possible.
Fashion photographer, Ben Watts attracts Victoria’s Secret models and is no stranger to the Oscar scene. Milk Studios co-founder Mazdack Rassi has made quite the name for himself in the talent industry, and high-profile event planner Jeffrey Jah has an impressive resume and Rolodex to boot.

To draw even more attention to SAS, this year famous DJs Zen Freeman, Chelsea Leyland and Carl Kennedy will all be playing sets. It’s also rumored that stars Naomi Watts, Alessandria Ambrosia, Dree Hemingway will all be in attendance.
With an event like this it is shocking that tickets are only $46. And even more impressive, a percentage of each ticket sold is donated to the Montauk Playhouse, a community center desperate for funding featuring numerous programs, such as child day care, senior nutrition and adult day care.
Why not party hard if it is going to support something as good as that? This event can simply not stop trying to outdo itself and a good excuse to party always helps.
But really, what’s a party with out an official drink? WattsUp Rosé will be the house libation of the evening. Watts and Wine Awsomeness launched the limited edition blush wine this past Memorial Day at Navy Beach in Montauk.
Shark Attack Sounds is 18 to enter, 21 to drink, with the doors opening at 6 p.m. and probably not closing until 6 a.m. the next morning. Don’t forget to purchase your ticket in advance because chances are they will all be gone at the door.
Clearly, the party’s name stems from Montauk’s fascination with sharks. But interestingly, it’s speculated that in Peter Benchley’s classic novel Jaws, Quint’s character was inspired by Montauk shark fisherman Frank Mundus. And we all know Quint’s famous line in the blockbuster: “I think we’re gonna need a bigger boat.”
Well, Quint, we think we’re gonna need a bigger space.
