Paul McCartney Releases 'New' on Vinyl, Cover Art Nominated
Amagansett resident Paul McCartney stars in Paul McCartney: Something New, a one-hour documentary exploring the recording of his latest album, New, on Palladia, VH1’s sister channel. Along with being very busy promoting New, and recently concluding his first Japanese tour in 11 years, McCartney has released the album in a special vinyl edition, perfect for a holiday gift.
The 180-gram gatefold vinyl version of New (now with purple cover art) was released last week in Britain and on Tuesday, December 17 in the U.S. Thanks to this new format, and new colorway of its Dan Flavin-inspired cover, New has also been nominated for best artwork at the Best Art Vinyl awards. Fans can cast their vote for the best album artwork at the BAV awards website here. This throwback-style release also comes with a convenient digital download card so fans don’t have to buy the record twice. It can be purchased in stores or through Amazon.com.
In the Paul McCartney: Something New documentary, which aired on December 6 as part of Palladia’s “An Evening with Paul McCartney” event, McCartney shares his experiences working with the album’s producers—Mark Ronson, Paul Epworth, Giles Martin and Ethan Johns. “He had four guys…with the energy to keep up with him,” one talking head says in the film, adding, “It took four producers to work with Paul.” Friends and colleagues go on to explain that creating New and touring with McCartney was often spontaneous and free flowing.
“I love it all,” McCartney says in the film, describing his enjoyment of recording and playing live.
The New tour took the former Beatle to Japan from November 9 – 22, with stops, and multiple shows, in Osaka, Fukuoka and Tokyo. “Beatlemania is still very much alive in a large part of the world,” the film notes, recalling McCartney’s fans in South America and other tour stops abroad. As he says, “Nobody’s Beatle-proof.”
Released in October, New debuted at #3 in the Billboard Hot 200 chart and received widespread acclaim from both critics and fans.
