Police: Man Arrested for DWI After Fatal Hampton Bays Crash
A pedestrian died in a crash in Hampton Bays predawn on Sunday and now a man who was drunk behind the wheel of a pick-up truck is under arrest, according to Southampton Town police.
Police said the accident occurred around 4:24 a.m. west of the intersection of Montauk Highway and Ponquogue Avenue–the center of Hampton Bays’ business district.
In addition to Southampton Town police, the New York State Police Forensic ID & Collision Reconstruction Unit and the Hampton Bays Fire Department responded to the scene, where a pick-up truck crashed into two parked cars and hit a pedestrian, police said.
According to a police report, Donna Sartori was standing near her parked car while delivering newspapers when a 2001 Ford pick-up truck driving west on Montauk Highway first hit a parked car, then her and her parked car. Sartori, 56, of Middle Island was pronounced dead at the scene, the report stated. The driver of the pick-up, 31-year-old Joseph Perez, of Aquebogue, was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries.
Perez is charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor.
