Joseph Conaty on View at Whimsical Gallery's Debut Show in Southampton
The newest upstart to hit the Hamptons art scene, Whimsical Gallery, opens with its debut group exhibition on Friday, March 21 in Southampton. The show, according to owner and gallerist Stavroula Raia, features a selection of artists working with vibrant colors and—true to the gallery’s name—whimsical subject matter.
The diverse group of artists on display includes longtime Dan’s Papers delivery driver Joe Conaty, Dan’s Papers cover artist and fashion designer Audrey Schilt, computer artist Alan Richards and others, such as a dog portrait artist and a painter from New Orleans.
An abstract expressionist at heart, Conaty is exhibiting vibrant and energetic works from his large body of work, which has rarely been shown. The Dan’s driver and painter said he’s unused to the fanfare that comes with exhibiting, but he was excited about Friday’s opening.
Whimsical Gallery will actually have three opening receptions over the weekend. The first is from 5–9 p.m. on Friday, March 21, followed by an opening at the same time on Saturday, March 22 and a third from 3–7 p.m. on Sunday, March 23. For now, Raia said she’ll open on weekends and eventually move to weekday hours during the busy season, if it’s warranted.
“I’m thrilled,” Raia said of Whimsical Gallery’s first exhibition. “It’s a nice group.”
