Poxabogue Golf Course Opens This Week for 50th Year
Following months of winter, golf weather is back, and with it comes the opening of Poxabogue Golf Course this week.
Situated amongst the farm fields of Sagaponack and Bridgehampton, the 39-acre, Southampton Town-owned course is nine holes of public fun, complete with pro shop and driving range. Starting today, Wednesday, March 19, the course will be open six days a week through May, and seven days a week starting in June. One of the few public courses in a land of world class private clubs, Poxabogue offers locals and visitors access to a beautiful and affordable venue for golf on the East End.
“Poxabogue reflects the historic charm of the area and has a very welcoming atmosphere,” Councilwoman and liaison to the Town’s Parks & Recreation Department Christine Scalera says of the course, which was built in the 1960s and celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. “It’s a great place to play a round of golf after work or bring your family to hit balls on the range without the air of pomp or formalities,” Scalera continues, adding. “That vibe is what draws everyone from local fishermen, to Wall Street millionaires, to A-list celebrities to play at the course.”
Formerly co-owned by both municipalities, the Town of Southampton purchased East Hampton Town’s share of Poxabogue through the Community Preservation Fund. Following a bid process, the Town contracted with Steven Lee PGA Golf for the operation and maintenance of the golf facilities. The Fairway Restaurant, also located on the property, is under a separate license agreement and will continue to be run by longtime tenant Dan Murray.
Lee was the PGA Pro and General Manager at Calverton Links for 15 years, bringing more than 22 years of experience in managing golf facilities. Lee and his staff have already begun making several enhancements at Poxabogue. “Last year we started out late in June but immediately got around 40 new mats, a new supply of balls, and added yardage markers on the range to add to the visual appeal,” he says. “This past September we underwent a massive aeration project on the tees, greens and fairways, and over the winter we did a renovation of the shrubs by the putting green and tree pruning on the course. We really want to make Poxabogue look pristine,” Lee continues. “We’re starting out the year by cleaning up the bunkers and adding sand as well as putting in an additional grass hitting area. We have more changes coming up.”
In addition to the restaurant, pro shop, course, range and putting green, Poxabogue also offers private lessons, camps, clinics, and other special events like demo days with major club brands. The first golf clinic will start on Saturday, April 26 for ages 14–adult.
