Sick Dolphin Swimming Around Sag Harbor Cove
A sick dolphin was found in the shallows of Sag Harbor Cove, between Bay Point and North Haven, on Thursday night, and the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation is monitoring the dolphin now.
Dan’s Papers employee Lisa Barone, who lives on Bay Point, called police Thursday night to report the bottlenose dolphin sighting. Barone said the dolphin was in very shallow water and not moving much. The police called in the Riverhead Foundation.
A Riverhead Foundation spokeswoman said mid-day Friday that foundation workers considered euthanizing the dolphin because it appeared to be very sick. But now, the dolphin has swam into deeper water and is showing more energy.
The foundation was also concerned that the dolphin could be affected with morbillivirus, a measles-like virus that infected many dolphins found on the coast last summer.
