Amy Zerner's Fashion Sense: Flights of Fancy
I love to design jewelry with bird imagery — here are a few examples.
In all cultures worldwide, the bird has symbolized the human spirit or soul, and is frequently connected to the divine. Birds tend to be symbols for freedom because of their natural instinct and ability of flight. They remind us to look outside of ourselves for clues and meanings to see what is in store for us in the future. In ancient lore, birds often accompanied heroes on their quests. The bird could fly on ahead and forewarn the hero of impending danger (giving rise to the popular phrase, “a little bird told me”).
Sparrows and swallows are well known for two things. The first being that they travel great distances. They fly miles and miles through the air but always return back to their “home.” This represents loyalty. The swallow also represents love, care and affection towards family and friends, showing the loyalty of a person who always returns to them. The sparrow speaks of higher thoughts and ideals, beckoning us to keep our burdens as light as we can in order to avoid a heavy heart.
Birds are messengers between the divine and the mundane — they are like angels of the animal world.
Creatures who fly through the air are able to offer the best understanding of its invisible, ethereal ways. Also being closest to the heavens, birds symbolize how our spirit can lift and fly high in the skies of imagination and seek out new ideas and innovations. Let your spirit soar!
