Southampton Arts Center Plans Summer Events, Camps for Kids
Southampton Arts Center has lined up a summer full of events for children and their parents to be entertained and while learning something along the way.
Programs range from concerts and film screenings to puppet shows and live animal presentations.
“Our Kids@ Southampton Arts Center program is central to our summer plans and we are thrilled that so much of our schedule will appeal to all ages,” said Southampton Arts Center director Michele Thompson. “Our hope is that our events will become a part of your weekly family plans.”
Jazz at Lincoln Center is headed to Southampton Arts Center on July 12, August 2 and August 23 for 5 p.m. concerts that focus on the role of jazz in the Harlem Renaissance, the Civil Rights Movement and democracy.
Pianofest, the longtime summer music festival across the Hamptons, will present a concerted geared toward children on Saturday, July 19, at 5 p.m.
Sag Harbor’s Goat on a Boat Puppet Theatre and Southampton Arts Center are co-curting a series of free outdoor concerts and puppet shows, including Red Riding Hood, Robin Hood and The Three Little Pigs. Punch and Judy will kick off the series on Thursday, June 26, at 4:30 p.m.
Presenting puppeteer companies will be A Couple of Puppets, Puppet Showplace Theatre, Talking Hands Theatre and WonderSpark Puppets.
Thursday, July 31, Astrograss, an acoustic and bluegrass band from Brooklyn, will perform bluegrass, old time and folk music outdoors.
Quogue Wildlife Refuge will give children an up-close view of an owl, opossum, lizard, tortoise, a tarantula, a chinchilla and more on Thursday, July 10, and Thursday, August 21, at 5 p.m.
Southampton Arts Center’s outdoor film series, in partnership with Hamptons International Film Festival, includes several films kids will love. Announced to date are Ghostbusters on June 27, Back to the Future on July 11 and E.T. the Extra Terrestrial on July 25.
August will bring summer camps to the center.
Bay Street Theatre is Sag Harbor will bring two camps: At Kids Theater Camp, children ages 7 to 9 will create a play entitled Land of Make Believe from August 4 to 8. Students ages 9 to 12 will use pop music and Broadway’s favorites to discover what it might be like if their lives were musicals in My Life as a Musical: Camp! from August 11 to 15. Hamptons International Film Festival will offer two Student Summer Film Workshops between August 18 and 22. Introduction to Filmmaking is for students ages 8 to 11 and Intermediate Hands-On Filmmaking is for students ages 12 to 15. Students will join professional filmmakers to learn the entire digital moviemaking process and create their own films, culminating in a screening of students’ work. Register by calling 631-324-4600.
