Sound Waves Hit the Montauk Shore at Gurney's

With hot spots like Ruschmeyers and Surf Lodge, Montauk has become the mecca for nightlife on the East End. Now, Gurney’s is bringing that exciting scene to Saturday afternoons this summer with Sound Waves @ The Beach.
Sound Waves @ The Beach is a seven-week-long music and fashion series that debuted in Montauk just last year. Musical performers included members of legendary bands Depeche Mode, Duran Duran and The Smiths, while fashion presentations included MILLY by Michelle Smith.
“Sound Waves was the must-attend Hamptons party scene last year, and we’re beyond excited to take it to the next level this season. We don’t want to give too much away, but make sure you don’t miss this,” said Lance Broumand, the CEO of UrbanDaddy, a partner of the event.
Part of the Sound Waves revamp includes a new setting, Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa.
“We are excited to be hosting Sound Waves @ The Beach at Gurney’s,” said Jenny Oz Leroy, the director of F&B at Gurney’s Montauk. “We believe the eclectic program will appeal to a wide audience who enjoy both cutting edge music and fashion amid a stunning ocean front setting. Sound Waves @ The Beach is an exciting addition to both the new Gurney’s and the Hamptons ever growing entertainment scene.”
Ian Gerard, the CEO of Syndicate-5, the presenter of Sound Waves @ The Beach, stated, “We are so excited to take Sound Waves from poolside to the beachfront. When we heard that Gurney’s was under new ownership with a plan to contemporize what is clearly the largest and most beautiful resort on the East End, we knew we had to bring Sound Waves…to the Beach. With a 30,000 sq. ft. outdoor space, it allows us to buck the trend of Montauk venues that leave too many guests stuck waiting on never ending lines.”
Gerard said that the Montauk Beach House, last year’s location, was a great venue for a pool party vibe. The newly renovated Gurney’s, however, will give the event the chance to be more interactive. This year, Sound Waves @ The Beach will have everything from photo booths to make-your-own cocktails. Cointreau Rickey stations will allow guests to create their own signature “garden to cocktail” libations under the guidance of a trained bartender. “There’s something for everyone to do. You can dance near the DJ for two hours or sit in a hammock all day, sip a cocktail and never move.”
It’s no surprise that Sound Waves @ The Beach chose Gurney’s. The resort has been one of Montauk’s main attractions since purchased by Nick Monte in the 1950s. By constantly adding new amenities, starting as simply as serving alcoholic beverages and eventually building its famous seawater spa, Monte transformed Gurney’s into an iconic feature of Montauk. Gurney’s has undergone numerous transformations throughout its 88-year history, most recently last year with its purchase by two new owners. Today, Gurney’s is the only four-season resort in Montauk, featuring 109 rooms, suites and cottages, plus multiple restaurants and bars.
Last year, Sound Waves had a retro angle, but this year the event is focused on current talents.
“This year you can expect many great DJ performances again, but we will be more focused on talent that is currently climbing the ladder to international recognition and the opening day line-up echoes that approach” says Mathew Thomas, the series’s music director.
Sound Waves @ The Beach will start off strong with a DJ performance by Ben Lovett of Mumford & Sons, who is coming to the East End exclusively for this event. The Big P.A. of Bang the Drum, DJ Vikas, and a fashion presentation will round out the opening event.
The series launches on Saturday, July 19, and continues every Saturday from 2 to 7 p.m. through August 30. All events are complimentary and invitation-only. Anyone interested in attending should visit the Sound Waves @ The Beach Facebook page: facebook.com/MBHSummerMusicSeries. Invitation information and music and fashion talent line-ups will be announced there on a weekly basis.
