Bristal Assisted Living Community Now Open in Sayville

The Bristal family of assisted-living communities is renowned for high quality care and lovely settings across New York and in New Jersey. Director Lara Serro shared some of her insights during our recent visit to the Bristal at Sayville.

What has your journey at the Bristal been like?
I am very excited to open our newest Bristal community. Prior to Sayville, I was the Executive Director at the Bristal in East Meadow for over 12 years. Although I have formed long lasting relationships in East Meadow, I look forward to building relationships with the residents, families and staff here in Sayville.

The Reflections Wing, containing apartments for residents with Alzheimer’s disease, has a staff ratio of eight-to-one, which exceeds New York State guidelines. Is Reflections new to the Bristal community?
All Bristal communities have a Reflections neighborhood in which we help residents who are memory-impaired in a comfortable and safe environment.

Bristal guests who wish to have an intimate family dinner may use the private dining room, which is simply lovely with its coral floral design and dark wood. Would you tell us some of the comments you often hear from family members and guests?
It means a lot to families! Many have said how “wonderful it is that we can still entertain and share a family dinner together in Mom’s new home.”

Accommodations range from studios to one- and two-bedroom apartments. Since the Welcome Center opened, how many units have been booked and when did the first guests check in?
We opened our doors on July 10, 2014 and currently have over 70 residents living with us.

You have a richly varied and extensive choice of interests—what are some of the many features guests enjoy?
Guests are able to participate in entertainment, barbecues, card games, lectures, exercise, book clubs and trips on our bus.

The Bistro and Billiard Room with its piano is delightful, but so are the private living rooms…so one can enjoy a good book and later dance to some great music. Do you ever wish you were a guest?
All the time!

What else can you tell us about the Bristal at Sayville?
We have a dedicated staff, and a host of services and amenities including 24-hour security throughout the building, utilities, three healthy gourmet meals per day, daily housekeeping services, personal laundry, weekly laundering of bed and bath linens, an emergency response system in every suite, scheduled transportation to shopping, community activities and group outings and a professional maintenance and management team with round-the-clock availability.
