The Sisters Laffey Take the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge
Under partly sunny skies and a not-quite-August-like 70-degree day, Dan’s Papers sections editor Kelly Laffey and her sister Katie took the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, opting to both donate and to have Dan’s Papers web editor Brendan J. O’Reilly dump ice water on their heads.
Kelly was nominated by her cousin Meghan Dodge; Katie by her friends Dot Mackey and Irene Sigambris. They completed the challenge on the south side of the Dan’s Papers building, and Kelly opted to nominate the Dan’s neighbors Ocean Electric, as well as marketing and events manager Ellen Dioguardi. CEO Bob Edelman is also welcome to take the Challenge. Katie nominated brother Sean Laffey, family friend Mary Welsh and friend Seojung Chung.
The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has taken the country by storm, largely due to its active social media presence. Those who are nominated are given 24 hours to either donate $100 to the ALS Association or dump a bucket of ice water over their heads. Many have opted to both make a donation and get wet. As of August 22, the ALS Association has received $53.3 million in donations compared to $2.2 million during the same time period last year (July 29 to August 21). The increase is wholly attributed to the Challenge.
