Gurney's Montauk Seawater Spa: One of The East End’s Most Lavish Spas

Back to school season tends to be high-stress; mitigate the anxiety around the end of summer by bee lining straight to Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa.
Recently revamped, the resort features a 30,000-square-foot mega spa boasting 40 treatment rooms—including couples suites and body therapy rooms/wet rooms—a salon with hair and nail stations, a slew of fitness options and North America’s only sand-filtered seawater swimming pool.
We spoke with spa director Candice Monte to find out more about this lavish East End spa.
Do you have to be staying at the hotel to use the spa?
No. We have many spa members who live locally. Also non-hotel guests are welcome to obtain day passes and use our spa facilities for $40 a day. For non-guests who have purchased services, the facility fee is $30.
What amenities are included with each spa appointment?
Roman baths, Finnish rock sauna, fitness center and our world-famous indoor sand-filtered, ocean-fed, heated seawater pool—the only one of its kind in North America.
Can you tell us more about your seawater pool?
The Seawater Pool at Gurney’s uses seawater that has been drawn directly from the coastal waters off Montauk, sand-filtered and then warmed to the perfect temperature for relaxation or exercise. We offer lap training, aquatic yoga, and other thalasso programs (thalasso is the medical use of seawater as a form of therapy). Or, you can swim in your own style and at your own pace. The pool features floor-to-ceiling panoramic sliding glass doors with unobstructed views of the ocean.
The main component of seawater is sodium chloride, but it is also rich in minerals and trace elements. Immersion in warm seawater allows those minerals to pass through the skin. Soaking in seawater helps improve micro-circulation of blood vessels which in turn helps nourish and oxygenate cells.
Can you tell us a little more about your fitness offerings?
We offer a variety of daily fitness classes, including spinning, yoga, pilates, Beach Boot Camp, Aqua Fit and Aqua Zumba in our seawater pool. Additionally, we have partnered with Row House, a premiere boutique studio in the rowing fitness trend, to offer its signature Full Body Row classes at our resort throughout summer 2014.
Can you walk us through your facilities?
We have 40 treatment rooms — three of the 40 are couples suites, five are body therapy rooms/wet rooms, one thalasso suite (where our thalasso tub is located). Our upper level features a salon, which has five private treatment rooms for facials and massages, two hair stations, and three pedicure and nail stations.
What are some of your most unique treatments?
Our signature treatments are Active Green Argilite Mud Therapy, Head to Toe Radiance Treatment, Marine Kur, and Ultimate Detox Therapy.
What are the most popular treatments?
Massage of course, facials, our Brush and Tone Seaweed Wrap and Sea Mineral Scrubs.
Do you have any notable spa packages or deals planned for the fall?
We have Day packages available, Day of Beauty, Day of Vitality, Mother and Daughter Package and Ultimate Spa Day. Each package includes specific services, use our facilities, a 60 minute fitness class and 20% off lunch on the day of the package.
Any tips for extending the relaxing post spa feel?
Bringing home some of our marine-based products that are used in our services is a good way to start. Living a healthy lifestyle that includes proper eating and exercise with plenty of water will also help.
How often and when do you recommend people get facials?
Monthly for aging skin, and every other month for younger skin.
Any good DIY beauty recipes?
Taking some of our sea salt home and bathing in a tub of hot water for 30 minutes a day is great for detoxifying. Also, a daily shot of apple cider vinegar with a teaspoon of Manuka honey is great for re-balancing your body.
What are some fun things guests can do pre and post spa at the resort?
Dine at one of our four restaurants including The Seawater Grill overlooking the ocean and the Beach Club at Gurney’s, the only on-beach, full-service restaurant in all of the Hamptons, and enjoy sunset cocktails and nightcaps at the fire pits.
