North Fork, Hamptons Farmstands and Farmers Markets
You’ll hear home gardeners say that July is the height of the harvest season—when those juicy local tomatoes start to flow. Others—or possibly those same gardeners—will then say that August is the zenith, replete with hot weather crops like peppers, eggplant and squash. Now that it’s September we’re really in the thick of it all with second plantings of cooler weather crops like spinach, arugula, lettuces and radishes on the scene combined with all the goodies that have been maturing throughout the season like cantaloupe, pears and watermelon.
Farmers know that the fall is the biggest harvest season. As you read this fresh, local tomatoes, leeks, onions, carrots, raspberries, mushrooms, garlic and herbs are lining the shelves of your local farmstand. And, of course, drum roll please…apples, corn and pumpkins are all over the East End! It’s a great time and place to be a locavore.
The East End is now home to 13 seasonal farmers markets, located in Bridgehampton, East Hampton, Flanders, Greenport, Hampton Bays, Mattituck, Montauk, Sag Harbor, Shelter Island, Southampton, Southold, Springs and Westhampton Beach. Plus the popular, year-round market on Riverhead’s Main Street.
On the East End, all of our farmers markets are held weekly. Below is a complete list of the markets that are open now. My “favorite” North Fork farmstands are too numerous to mention, so I’ve listed below my fave South Fork stands.
