Head-On Collision Affecting Traffic on County Road 39A
Two vehicles, a westbound Honda Civic hybrid and an eastbound Chevrolet Prizm, were involved in a head-on collision, with injuries, in the eastbound lane of County Road 39A in Southampton on Friday morning, April 10.
As of 11:23 a.m., the westbound lane was open while eastbound traffic was being diverted to David Whites Lane.
Several Southampton Village Police cars, Southampton Village Volunteer ambulances, and a Southampton Fire Department firetruck were on scene as fire department personnel attempted to remove at least one crash victim out of the westbound vehicle using a hydraulic rescue tool, also knows as “the jaws of life.”
The eastbound vehicle’s windshield was shattered, but its airbag deployed, likely protecting the driver from more grievous injury. Southampton Village EMS and Ambulance volunteers put the driver in a neck brace, gave him a blanket and then loaded him by stretcher into a waiting ambulance.
The front end of both cars was badly damaged, spreading glass and debris, including an entire headlight from the Honda, across both lanes of the highway.
